Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. | Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps up from the ground below basements. You can’t see it or smell it, but it could harm your family. There are no symptoms of radon poisoning, but it has been found to be very dangerous to people—causing between 7,000 and 30,000 lung cancer deaths a year (according to the Environmental Protection Agency). The risk is even greater if people smoke in your house. A simple test can detect radon in basements. You can buy a test kit for around $10 at most hardware stores. If the test shows that there are high radon levels in your basement, there is something you can do about it. A simple process can remove the gas from your basement and push it outside where it will do no harm. That process—called radon remediation—can be free to you if you don’t make a lot of money and are a Delaware resident. |
