Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps up from the ground below basements. There are no symptoms of radon poisoning, but it has been found to be very dangerous to people—causing between 7,000 and 30,000 lung cancer deaths a year (according to the Environmental Protection Agency). The risk is even greater if people smoke in your house.
- A simple test can detect radon in basements. You can purchase one for around $10 at most hardware stores or contact the Division of Public Health Radon Office to find out if you qualify for a free test kit.
